TLDR
Karlach, Fury of Avernus is best when you treat her as an extra-combat engine, not just a big red attacker.
The top Karlach Commander decks for EDH are usually built around one of these Backgrounds: Raised by Giants, Flaming Fist, Sword Coast Sailor, Hardy Outlander, Acolyte of Bahamut, or Cultist of the Absolute.
My pick for the best all-around Karlach deck is Karlach + Raised by Giants. My pick for the most explosive version is Karlach + Flaming Fist. My pick for the most interactive version is Karlach + Sword Coast Sailor.
Karlach reads like a dare: attack once, untap everything, get first strike, then attack again. That is not subtle. And honestly, that is the appeal.
The trick with Karlach Commander decks for EDH is that her Background changes almost everything. Same commander, totally different night. One build is Gruul stompy. One is Boros Voltron. One is Izzet tempo. One is a Dragon deck. One is Rakdos sacrifice-combat nonsense where you may occasionally look at your own board and mutter, “I have made choices.”
That is a good commander.
Why Karlach Is Such A Good EDH Build-Around
Karlach, Fury of Avernus is a five-mana 5/4 red legendary creature with one big job: make combat happen twice. Her attack trigger cares about your first combat phase of the turn, then untaps all attacking creatures, gives them first strike, and adds another combat phase.
That means Karlach rewards three things:
- Creatures that attack well.
- Creatures with attack or combat damage triggers.
- Ways to make attacking safer, faster, or bigger.
She also has Choose a Background, which lets you pair her with a Background as a second commander. That is why Karlach has so many real builds instead of just “red creatures plus extra combats.” The Background adds a color, a second command-zone card, and a clear direction.
Here is the useful version of the ranking:
| Rank | Karlach Deck | Colors | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Karlach + Raised by Giants | Gruul | Big commander damage and stompy threats |
| 2 | Karlach + Flaming Fist | Boros | Voltron and fast kills |
| 3 | Karlach + Sword Coast Sailor | Izzet | Evasion, card draw, and interaction |
| 4 | Karlach + Hardy Outlander | Gruul | Creature combat and power-doubling swings |
| 5 | Karlach + Acolyte of Bahamut | Gruul | Dragons and big threat density |
| 6 | Karlach + Cultist of the Absolute | Rakdos | Sacrifice, evasion, and risky aggression |
None of these are wrong. They just ask different things from you.
Karlach + Raised By Giants: Best All-Around Stompy Build
Karlach + Raised by Giants is my pick for the best overall Karlach Commander deck if you want something powerful, readable, and very on-theme.
Raised by Giants makes your commander a 10/10 Giant. Karlach already wants to attack twice. Put those together and you get a commander that can threaten lethal damage quickly without needing a giant pile of equipment. The Background also gives you green, which matters a lot. Red brings combat. Green brings ramp, trample, creature draw, and huge bodies.
This build wants to play like Gruul commander damage with a real board behind it. You are not all-in on Karlach, but Karlach is still the headline.
Good cards for the shell include:
- Rishkar’s Expertise for a huge reload.
- Garruk’s Uprising to give trample and draw cards from big creatures.
- Return of the Wildspeaker as both card draw and a finisher.
- Xenagos, God of Revels to make one attacker absurd.
- Berserkers’ Onslaught if you want more double strike pressure.
- Heroic Intervention to protect the board.
- Rhythm of the Wild to help your threats land and attack.
The main weakness is evasion. A 10/10 commander is scary, but a 1/1 token still blocks it unless you give Karlach trample, menace, flying, or another way through. So do not skip trample. That is not a bonus in this deck. It is part of the engine.
This is the version I’d recommend to someone who wants Karlach to feel strong without turning every game into a pure Voltron race.
Karlach + Flaming Fist: Best Voltron Karlach Deck
Karlach + Flaming Fist is the cleanest “you are going to die to commander damage” version.
Flaming Fist gives your commander double strike when she attacks. Karlach gives you another combat. Add equipment, protection, and a little power boosting, and suddenly the table has to answer Karlach right now. Not later. Right now.
This deck is very direct. You suit up Karlach, protect her, and attack the player most likely to stop you. Then you attack again. Sometimes that is enough. Sometimes you need one more piece.
The cards you want are not complicated:
- Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves for haste and protection.
- Darksteel Plate or Mithril Coat to keep Karlach alive.
- Sword of the Animist because Boros still wants mana.
- Two-Handed Axe because double strike and power boosts get silly fast.
- Blackblade Reforged if you want Karlach to end games quickly.
- Boros Charm for protection or surprise damage.
- Aurelia, the Warleader because extra combats stack up in the most Boros way possible.
The upside is speed. The downside is predictability. Everyone can see what you are doing. There is no mystery here. You are not building an elaborate Rube Goldberg machine. You are putting a flaming barbarian into the red zone and asking if anyone has removal.
That can be a feature, not a bug. Some EDH decks spend eight turns assembling a plan and still do nothing. Flaming Fist Karlach does not have that problem.
Karlach + Sword Coast Sailor: Best Interactive Karlach Deck
Karlach + Sword Coast Sailor is the version I like most for players who want Karlach to do Karlach things, but also want access to blue.
Sword Coast Sailor helps Karlach get through blockers when she attacks the player at the highest life total, or tied for it. That matters because Karlach wants to attack, but she is not naturally evasive. Blue also gives you draw, counterspells, bounce, and better ways to protect your plan.
This deck can play a tempo game. You land Karlach, keep mana open, protect your attacks, and punish the player who thinks one blocker is enough. It is still a combat deck, but it does not feel as linear as the Boros version.
Cards I like here include:
- Reconnaissance Mission for card draw from combat damage.
- Bident of Thassa for the same reason.
- Professional Face-Breaker for Treasure and card access.
- Frostboil Snarl, Stormcarved Coast, and other clean Izzet fixing.
- Counterspell, Swan Song, or An Offer You Can’t Refuse to defend key turns.
- Aggravated Assault if you want another extra-combat engine.
- Port Razer because extra combat on a creature gets better when Karlach is already untapping attackers.
The big appeal is flexibility. You can build this as Voltron, combat-damage triggers, Treasure tempo, or spells-and-swords. Sword Coast Sailor does not force one exact decklist.
The tradeoff is that you may deal less raw damage than Flaming Fist or Raised by Giants. But you get better tools for actually playing a long game.
Karlach + Hardy Outlander: Best Creature Combat Build
Hardy Outlander is a strong Gruul option if you want to attack with more than just Karlach.
The Background gives Karlach a trigger that can pump another creature when Karlach attacks a player with the highest life total or tied for it. Since Karlach creates a second combat, you get more opportunities to turn one attacker into a huge problem. This makes the deck feel less like “Karlach kills you alone” and more like “Karlach leads the charge.”
That is an important difference.
Hardy Outlander wants big creatures, trample, and attack triggers. It likes creatures that scale well when pumped and creatures that are already annoying to block.
Good fits include:
- Etali, Primal Storm for attack-trigger value.
- Inferno Titan for pressure and removal.
- Questing Beast because combat math gets unpleasant fast.
- Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma to reduce costs and help with trample.
- Thunderfoot Baloth as a big-board payoff.
- Overwhelming Stampede as a clean closer.
- Savage Ventmaw if you want to connect combat with mana.
Hardy Outlander is not as instantly scary as Raised by Giants. It is also not as simple as Flaming Fist. But it does a better job turning your whole board into a problem.
This is the Karlach deck I’d recommend if your favorite Commander phrase is “declare attackers.”
Karlach + Acolyte Of Bahamut: Best Dragon Build
Karlach + Acolyte of Bahamut is the obvious pick if you want Dragons. It is not the most popular Karlach pairing, but it has a clear identity.
Acolyte of Bahamut reduces the cost of the first Dragon spell you cast each turn while your commander has the ability. That gives Karlach a reason to lead a Gruul Dragon deck instead of just another extra-combat pile. Dragons already love attacking. Karlach gives them more combats. This is not subtle deckbuilding, but again, Karlach is not exactly a subtle card.
The Dragon package can include:
- Atarka, World Render for double strike attacks.
- Thrakkus the Butcher to pump your Dragons.
- Lathliss, Dragon Queen for token production.
- Drakuseth, Maw of Flames for removal stapled to attacks.
- Dragon Tempest for haste and damage.
- Dragonspeaker Shaman and Dragonlord’s Servant for more cost reduction.
- Savage Ventmaw because mana during combat is always suspicious in the best way.
The weakness is the curve. Dragons are expensive. Karlach costs five. If your opening hand is all six-drops and vibes, you are going to spend the early game watching other people develop.
So build the ramp package seriously. Two-mana ramp, Treasure makers, cost reducers, and cheap interaction matter. You are a Dragon deck, but you still need to play Magic before turn six.
Karlach + Cultist Of The Absolute: Best Risky Rakdos Build
Karlach + Cultist of the Absolute is the spicy version.
Cultist of the Absolute gives your commander a pile of scary keywords and stats, but it also asks you to sacrifice a creature at the beginning of your upkeep. That means this deck wants fodder, tokens, recursion, and a willingness to play a little dangerously.
The reward is real. Karlach with flying, deathtouch, ward, and extra power can hit hard and dodge normal combat problems. Add extra combats and the deck can close games quickly.
The problem is that you are adding a maintenance cost to a commander that already draws attention. If you build this like a normal Voltron deck and forget sacrifice fodder, Cultist will punish you.
Cards to consider:
- Ophiomancer for repeatable sacrifice fodder.
- Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia for a steady token.
- Bitterblossom if you want flying bodies every turn.
- Reassembling Skeleton and Bloodghast for recurring creatures.
- Mayhem Devil if you lean harder into sacrifice.
- Jeska’s Will because explosive red mana is always welcome.
- Malakir Rebirth to protect Karlach while also fitting the color pair.
This is not my first recommendation for a new Karlach player. But if you like Rakdos decks that turn pressure into a resource, this one has teeth.
What About Mono-Red Karlach?
You can build Karlach as a mono-red Commander deck without using a Background. It works. You get a clean extra-combat aggro shell with cards like Relentless Assault, Seize the Day, Moraug, Fury of Akoum, Combat Celebrant, Port Razer, Professional Face-Breaker, and damage doublers.
But I would treat mono-red Karlach as a budget or personal-preference build, not the strongest version. Giving up a Background means giving up a second command-zone card and an extra color. That is a real cost.
Mono-red Karlach is best if you want a simple, fast, lower-maintenance deck. It also makes a good starting point if you are still deciding which Background you like. Build the red combat core first, then add white, green, blue, or black once you know what kind of Karlach player you are.
The Core Cards Most Karlach Decks Want
No matter which Background you choose, Karlach decks usually care about the same basic jobs.
You need haste. Karlach costs five, and passing the turn after casting her feels awful. Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves, Rising of the Day, Fervor, Rhythm of the Wild, and Anger all help.
You need protection. Karlach is going to get removed. That is not pessimism. That is table survival instinct. Boots, Greaves, Boros Charm, Heroic Intervention, Deflecting Swat, Tyvar’s Stand, and similar cards are worth real slots.
You need card advantage. Combat decks run out of gas if every card only adds power. Green has creature draw. Blue has normal draw. White has equipment draw. Red has impulse draw and Treasure engines. Use what your colors give you.
You need a way through blockers. Trample, menace, flying, unblockable effects, Rogue’s Passage, Trailblazer’s Boots, Whispersilk Cloak, Dolmen Gate, and goad effects all help. Karlach does not win games by sitting behind a wall of tokens.
And you need enough mana. Extra combats are mana-hungry. Equipment is mana-hungry. Dragons are mana-hungry. If your Karlach deck feels clunky, start by checking the ramp before blaming the commander.
My Recommended Karlach Builds By Player Type
If you want the safest recommendation, build Karlach + Raised by Giants. It gives you a clear plan, strong colors, and big damage without needing every card to be an equipment piece.
If you want the fastest commander-damage deck, build Karlach + Flaming Fist. You will be the threat, but at least you will be an honest threat.
If you want interaction and evasion, build Karlach + Sword Coast Sailor. It gives you more play to the game and a better chance of surviving removal-heavy pods.
If you want creature combat, build Karlach + Hardy Outlander. It makes the whole board matter and gives you more interesting attack steps.
If you want Dragons, build Karlach + Acolyte of Bahamut. Just respect the curve.
If you want Rakdos risk, build Karlach + Cultist of the Absolute. Bring sacrifice fodder. Do not pretend you will remember later. You will not.
